The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fundamental role that digital platforms – including digital ID, payments and data interoperability – can play in helping countries to rapidly, effectively and responsibly provide relief to people. Digital platforms can empower people and countries to weather crises more resiliently and ensure that no one, including the poor and informal workers, is left behind. This is particularly important for women who work primarily in the informal sector – around 95 percent in South Asia and 89 percent in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The event will feature a panel discussion on how digital ID systems are an essential infrastructure for countries to effectively mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 through targeted delivery of cash transfers and shifting to online transactions for continuity of service delivery and accelerating the digital economy. The discussion will also explore the importance of inclusion and empowerment in the design and implementation of digital ID systems, so that vulnerable populations such as people without an official proof of identity (the ‘Invisible Billion’), marginalized women, informal workers, people living in remote areas, and people without digital access or literacy are not left behind. The panel will be followed by a showcase of the Mission Billion Innovation Challenge and the announcement of the winning solutions of the Global and WURI West Africa Prizes which seek to uncover new ways to promote inclusive access and use of digital ID systems.
